Creative Literacy with Travellers

Entitled "Learning Together" this project enabled two groups of Irish Travellers from Cambridgeshire to work with our literary project leader, Jannie Brightman, and artist Beverley Carpenter to learn literacy skills through creative arts.

Travellers are the largest ethnic minority in Cambridgeshire with many traditional working skills. As trading moves online literacy becomes essential however, for the economic wellbeing of the adults.

These travellers face much discrimination and have limited access to education and other resources. They are fighting for their cultural right to sites in order to allow for the first generation of children to go to school during term-time. Up and down the country statutory council provision for temporary sites, to enable travelling lifestyles outside of term-time, are unmet.
